Pillsbury Is Bringing Back Its Iconic 1988 "Doughboy" Cookie Jar, and I Can't Wait to Get One

Growing up, my mom kept her homemade chocolate chip cookies in a corner cabinet in our kitchen. One night, I waited until I thought everyone was asleep, then snuck out of bed for a midnight snack. When I opened the cabinet, it made a very loud squeak. I quickly grabbed a cookie from a plastic bag and closed the door slowly, hoping this would make the creaky sound quieter. It was just as loud, but somehow lasted longer.

When I turned around, my mom was standing in the kitchen doorway. She asked me what I thought I was doing, and made me hand over the cookie. I wish I could say this was my only attempt at sneaking cookies from that cabinet, but it was not. And I was caught every single time. Turns out, my mom purposely made that the designated cookie cabinet because of the squeak. It was a built-in alarm against wandering 8-year-old cookie hands.

I remember visiting friends who kept homemade cookies in jars on their counters. I was like a little cookie thief, quietly casing my friends’ kitchens to see how loud it would be if I took a treat. I was always jealous of the cookie jar households.

Which is why I was overcome with a huge wave of nostalgia when I heard that Pillsbury is bringing back its “Doughboy” cookie jar. I mean, the Pillsbury Doughboy has to be the most iconic of the baking mascots!

The Doughboy cookie jar is back to celebrate Poppin' Fresh's 60th birthday. (Yes, his name is Poppin' Fresh.) This Pillsbury icon debuted in 1988, and now it’s emerging from the Pillsbury vault—but not for long.

While my family did not have the Doughboy cookie jar growing up, part of me wants one to start a new tradition. This would be an excellent place to store the homemade biscuits I make for my dog, Tilly.
