As someone born and raised in Ohio, I know nothing beats Amish-made goods, from cheese and bread to furniture. Unfortunately, even the most careful cheesemakers are not immune to run-ins with foodborne pathogens.
On September 5, Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op in Middlefield, Ohio, announced a recall for several types of cheese due to Listeria contamination.
Routine testing by the Amish-led co-op revealed the presence of Listeria in some of the products, as well as on the surfaces of equipment used for cutting the cheese. Listeria can cause serious foodborne illness, especially in older people or those with weakened immune systems.

How to Identify the Recalled Cheese
In its announcement, the co-op said its cheese products were sold through distributors, dining halls, and retail stores in Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas between July 7 and August 14, 2025.
Then, on September 9, Walmart announced the affected items were also sold at Sam’s Club stores in Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Currently, we’re unable to confirm which other major retailers may have sold the recalled cheese, but we’ll update this story as soon as we have more information.
