Everything You Need To Know About Trader Joe's Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake
Unlike the cakes and muffins near the produce, this cake, which costs $6.49 and easily feeds six, is tucked near the mochi and macarons in Trader Joe’s freezer aisle. The cake is made from two layers of vanilla sponge cake layered with a custard filling and covered with a stabilized whipped cream. The real star of the cake is a topping of strawberries dressed in a strawberry sauce.
Because the cake is iced with whipped cream and filled with custard, keeping this cake frozen gives it a nice, long shelf life, but it also means you have to thaw the cake in the fridge for 24 hours before you can serve and eat it.
Is this cake worth a 24-hour wait? Absolutely! The cake is tender, and the rich whipped cream pairs perfectly with the saucy berries. Instead of small bits of strawberries, this cake is topped with whole and halved berries that give each bite a great texture and flavor.
As for the “cloud” part of the cake’s name, this one doesn’t quite fit the definition of a cloud cake, which is typically gluten-free and risen with beaten egg whites. This cake is more like a classic vanilla sponge than a fluffy cloud cake. The cake itself contains flour, as well as a hint of hazelnut and almond, making it denser and ideal for holding the whipped cream and berries.
This Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake is the perfect dessert for a planned picnic or dinner party, and since it’ll last almost a year in the freezer, you might want to grab a few to keep on hand for summer entertaining.
