3 Food Recalls You Need to Know About This Week

It’s not every day a food you bought gets recalled for containing lead above United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) safety limits—but this week, three products are on the hot seat.

To be clear, no amount of lead is considered safe to consume, but it can be hard to avoid entirely. For instance, it can end up in foods depending on where they’re produced or grown, since both soil and manufacturing equipment can be contaminated with the metal.

Even low levels of lead exposure have been linked to adverse health consequences. Signs of lead toxicity include abdominal pain, lethargy, changes in behavior or mood, delirium, and seizures. In young children, lead exposure may contribute to developmental delays, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

3 Different Varieties of Wegmans Canned Fruit Recalled 

On September 12, Wegmans recalled three varieties of its store-brand canned fruit after they were found to contain lead levels above regulatory limits. These products include:

Sprouts Organics Recalls One Flavor of Baby Food Pouches 

On September 16, Sprout Organics, the makers of food pouches for babies and toddlers, voluntarily recalled one lot of its Sweet Potato Apple and Spinach flavor, after routine sampling revealed it may contain elevated levels of lead. 

The affected product was sold in Walgreens locations (as well as some independent stores in the Southern region of the U.S.) between September and December 2024. Here’s how you can identify the product, in case it’s still in your pantry.

As of September 19, no one has allegedly fallen ill after consuming this product. If you still have the product in your home, return it to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. FDA Expands Ground Cinnamon Alert 

On September 12, the FDA expanded its existing ground cinnamon public health alert to include another brand linked to elevated lead levels. Sample testing revealed that Jiva Organic ground cinnamon contained higher lead levels than what the federal agency considers safe to consume.

As of September 19, Jiva Organic has yet to recall this item, likely because it is no longer available in stores due to the best-before date. If you still have this product in your spice cabinet, the FDA urges you to throw it away and to stop purchasing this brand’s products until further notice.
