While there are a number of snackable bits and bobs I keep handy in my car or purse for in-between-meals-tummy-growling moments, none is more reliable than a good old granola bar. It basically never expires, it’s light and easy to carry around, and it hits the spot with almost no effort.
Unfortunately, someone recently pointed out that the granola bars I like are high in sugar and not as healthy as I thought. I was bummed to find out that I was basically eating a candy bar every time I thought I was nourishing myself with a quick snack. I needed to find a new go-to granola bar pronto. So, I reached out to four food experts and registered dietitians to find out which granola bars they recommend. Surprisingly, they all named the same brand.
The Granola Bar Enthusiasts
- Toby Amidor: Registered dietitian and author of 10 cookbooks, including The Healthy Meal Prep and Up Your Veggies
- Rena Awada: Mother of five, recipe developer, and food blogger for Healthy Fitness Meals
- Gisela Bouvier: Registered dietitian and mother of three
- Sheri Gaw: Registered dietitian, nutritionist, and certified diabetes care and education specialist

The Best Granola Bars
“My favorite granola bars are hands down Dave's Killer Bread Organic Snack Bars,” reveals Gaw, citing the brand’s ingredient list, health specs, taste, and flavor options as the reasons why.
“I love eating these bars because I can rest assured that I am consuming clean and wholesome ingredients,” says Awada. “Dave’s uses organic ingredients, and avoids using artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors unlike so many other brands."
Bouvier explains: “Many granola bars lack protein and/or have less fiber per serving, but the protein and fiber in Dave's snack bars help to increase satiety and balance blood sugar.”
Amidor adds an important consideration: healthy fats. “The combination of fiber, fat and protein provide a trifecta of nutrients to help keep you satisfied,” she says. But this trifecta isn’t not only about the health benefits. Protein, fiber, and fat can influence taste. “According to the 2024 International Food Information Council (IFIC) Food & Health Survey, taste is the number one purchase driver and it's definitely the case here.”
Gaw agrees: “These bars simply taste great without being too sweet. Cocoa Brownie Blitz is my favorite flavor. My kids and I are huge chocolate fans. I love that they have a strong cocoa taste but are not too sugary.”
There are six flavors to choose from. Awada agrees that Cocoa Brownie Blitz is the best one, but told me that I’d be missing out if I didn’t try Trail Mix Crumble and Oat-rageous Honey Almond (Amidor’s favorite post-tennis snack). I'm off to the grocery store!
