The $3.49 ALDI Find That Always Sells Out at Trader Joe's Is Back

It’s my new go-to lunch.

If you follow food news and trends, then you’ve probably noticed the growing buzz around kimbap, the beloved Korean dish that’s been making waves here in the United States. Made with rice (bap) and assorted fillings rolled in seaweed (gim or kim), this classic lunchtime staple surged in popularity after Trader Joe’s released its frozen version back in 2023.

Although it’s often mistaken for sushi, kimbap is distinctly Korean, featuring ingredients like pickled radish, spinach, carrots, and proteins such as bulgogi or fish cake. It’s a flavorful, convenient addition to any meal, and well worth seeking out to try if you haven’t before.

While the Trader Joe’s version has fans lining up every time it’s back in stock, there’s an even more elusive find at ALDI—and I just had to get my hands on it.

ALDI Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap

  • Price: $3.49 for a 8.1-ounce kimbap
  • Why I Love It: This kimbap is a delicious filling meal, with a nice kick of heat from the kimchi in the veggie and tofu filling.

Why I Love ALDI’s Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap

Never one to miss out on a foodie trend, ALDI continues to prove it has its finger firmly on the pulse of our collective cravings. The popular discount retailer’s take on Korean kimbap is a perfect example of just that. Matching Trader Joe’s 8.1-ounce portion size, but coming in at a slightly lower price point ($3.49 vs. Trader Joe’s $3.99), ALDI’s Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap delivers comparable presentation and undeniable attention to detail, making it a delicious and convenient lunchtime alternative.

One thing worth noting is that while both Aldi and Trader Joe’s kimbap recommend a two-minute cook time in the microwave, I found ALDI’s version needed an extra 30 seconds to fully thaw out. That said, the payoff is worth it—ALDI’s kimbap comes out super fresh, with soft, fluffy rice and a clean, tidy presentation.

The kimchi brings a gentle heat that’s far from overpowering and pairs beautifully with the well-balanced vegetable fillings. Each bite is fresh, flavorful, and, most importantly, noticeably heartier than the Trader Joe’s version.

ALDI’s version might not be vegetarian like Trader Joe’s, but it definitely doesn’t slack on the veggies. Plus, the kimchi and tofu combo adds a hearty, satisfying vibe that I didn’t get from Trader Joe’s at all.

Most importantly, ALDI’s kimbap holds its shape beautifully. It’s tightly packed and chopstick-friendly, with no crumbly mess in sight. Sure, it comes with eight pieces compared to Trader Joe’s nine, but each one is a little fatter and more substantial overall. If you ask me, that’s a major win when it comes to satisfying lunchtime hunger.
