My grandma was originally from Chicago, but she spent most of her adult life in California. There were many aspects of the Midwest she missed as a transplant to the West Coast, but the one that always made her nostalgic for childhood was White Castle hamburgers.
Back in her day, the square burgers sold for five cents each, and she had fond memories of trips to America’s first fast food hamburger chain with her cousins. We would always swing by the local White Castle whenever she came to visit us in Chicago.

She was a creative and resourceful woman, so my grandma came up with a way to recreate her favorite sliders any time she had a craving. Not only did her recipe replicate the size, shape, and oniony flavor profile of the original, but she also found a genius way to make them without a lot of fuss. Her oven-baked sliders have been a staple in our family ever since.
Simple Sliders for a Crowd
Sliders are fun to eat, but they can be tedious to make. Instead of forming 12 miniature hamburger patties, this recipe is a hands-off way to make a batch of sliders with minimal effort.
A simple burger mixture made with ground sirloin, breadcrumbs, onion, and salt is pressed into the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan. Then you just pop it in the oven and half an hour later, the recipe is almost done. Top with cheese and you are all set.

Oven Slider Tips
- Ground sirloin: Using ground beef with a lower fat content means less grease accumulates in the pan as the meat cooks.
- Pour off the liquid: The most essential step in the process is carefully pouring off any liquid from the pan before topping the meat patty with cheese.
- Cut the sliders evenly: When cutting the large patty into 12 sliders, make sure each one is of equal size and that it fits well on the dinner rolls or slider buns. You should be able to get 12 two-inch square patties.
Topping Options
Like any other hamburger, these sliders can be enjoyed as-is or piled high with your favorite toppings. I top mine with a few pickle slices and a little bit of ketchup. It keeps the recipe simple and nostalgic.

Make It a Meal
Grandma's Oven-Baked Sliders
Ingredients
-
1 1/2 pounds 93% lean ground sirloin
-
3 tablespoons seasoned breadcrumbs
-
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
-
1 teaspoon kosher salt
-
6 slices cheddar or American cheese
-
1 package (12-count) sweet dinner rolls or slider buns
Method
-
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
-
Make the meat mixture:
In a bowl, mix the ground sirloin, breadcrumbs, onions, and salt until evenly combined.
Gently press the mixture into a 9x13-inch pan so that it makes one large patty of even thickness. Use the tines of a fork to poke holes throughout the meat.
-
Bake:
Bake for 25 minutes. As it bakes, the meat will shrink away from the sides and liquid will accumulate around the edges of the pan. When fully cooked, remove the pan from the oven (leave the oven on) and carefully drain off the liquid.
-
Finish with cheese:
Top the meat with an even layer of sliced cheese and return the pan to the oven for about 2 minutes or until the cheese melts. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a few minutes.
Cut into 2-inch squares and place the squares on the dinner rolls or slider buns, making 12 mini hamburgers.
