After years of dreaming, I finally have a pizza oven—and it was worth the wait. For years, I've been making homemade pizza weekly, obsessively tweaking recipes and temperatures, and trying to perfect that crispy yet chewy crust in my regular oven.

When we moved into our new house four years ago, my husband sweetly promised to buy me a high-end pizza oven for my birthday. But when my son arrived (my second child), my pizza-making took a back seat, and I asked him to wait until I had the time and capacity to get back into it.

Why I Love Aldi's Gas-Powered Pizza Oven

It was the $99 price tag that initially grabbed my attention. I conducted a side-by-side comparison of the specs with the Ooni Koda 12 and was surprised to see that it looks virtually identical, yet costs 75% less. After using it for several days, I can confirm that it has much more to offer than just being budget-friendly.

I immediately loved how quickly it heated up, hitting over 900°F in about 15 to 20 minutes. With the heat this high, I can make authentic pizzeria-style pizza in about 60 seconds—a significant departure from using the indoor oven, which, by comparison, takes 12 to 14 minutes to cook the pizza and heats up the entire house.

The high internal temp creates the bubbly, slightly charred crust I've been chasing for years. The cheese melts into little puddles, and any additional toppings get lovely caramelized edges.

Given the awkward U-shape of our yard, I especially love that it doesn't require a lot of space. I set it on a small outdoor table and hooked it up to a standard propane tank, allowing me to use it all summer. But if anything changes, it's also portable and features legs that fold down for easy storage.

From a personal perspective, it's turned pizza night into a memorable family event. Tips & Tricks for Using Aldi's Gas Pizza Oven

There's definitely a learning curve with any high-heat pizza oven, but it's nothing that a few practice rounds can't solve. My first few pizzas looked more like abstract art than dinner, but after a few pies, I was getting the hang of it. I've learned some genuinely helpful tips for success:

  • Prepare. Have everything ready before you fire up the oven—sauce in bowls, cheese shredded, and toppings chopped, all within arm's reach. Once that stone hits 900°F, things move fast, and you don't want to be scrambling for ingredients.
  • Preheat. Let the stone preheat to 900°F, which will take approximately 20 minutes. Then, let it reheat for a minute between pizzas if you're cooking multiple rounds.
  • Turn it down for the cook. Once the pizza is in the oven, turn it down (or even off), depending on the type and thickness of your dough. When I left it on full heat, the pizza crust burnt almost immediately.
  • Use semolina or flour on your pizza peel. This is non-negotiable for preventing sticking. Once you get the hang of launching the pizza, you'll be able to adjust the amount you need.
  • Keep the toppings simple. Too much weight makes launching tricky and prevents even cooking.
  • Rotate your pizza. The heat source is located at the back, so the pizza needs to be turned every 15 to 20 seconds using a turning peel to achieve perfectly even browning. This also means that you can't walk away. 
  • You might need some new equipment. My wooden pizza peel was excellent for my regular oven, but it didn't work at all in the pizza oven. As soon as I switched to my neighbor's metal pizza peel, it was a total game-changer, and I could get under and around the pizza dough more easily.

It's only been a short time, but our new pizza oven has already sparked so much joy at our dinner table and with friends, including my son's fourth birthday, which was a definite hit!
