It's a real Danish kringle from Racine, Wisconsin.

My husband grew up in the kringle capital of the world, Racine, Wisconsin. Racine is known for its Danish kringle, an oval-shaped pastry filled with various delicious ingredients and topped with white icing. Every time he would take his mom out to lunch in Milwaukee, she’d bring a kringle or two for him to share with his office. Most of the time, he didn’t share and took it home instead.

But for those of you who don’t have a mom who brings you kringle for lunch, ALDI has an amazing solution: ALDI’s Racine Danish Kringle!

ALDI Racine Danish Kringle

  • Price: $6.99 for a 14-ounce package
  • Why I Love It: A buttery, flaky pastry filled with almond goodness, topped with just the right amount of white icing and tiny slices of almonds decoratively scattered on top.

Why I Love ALDI’s Racine Danish Kringle

ALDI’s Racine Danish Kringle is a real Danish kringle from Racine, and it has a made-in-Wisconsin label to prove it. That said, labels can sometimes be misleading. I picked up a kringle at my local ALDI for $6.99, and I decided to let my husband be the judge.

“This is authentic,” my hubby told me, before he proceeded to eat nearly half of the almond kringle I had purchased. A buttery, flaky pastry filled with almond goodness, topped with just the right amount of white icing and tiny slices of almonds decoratively scattered on top. “This tastes like it has marzipan,” my son said, snagging a few pieces.

Indeed, when you open the wrapper, you are enveloped in an almond aroma. For my husband, the almond is his favorite of the two ALDI kringle flavors, as it is one of the most traditional of kringle tastes.

Our son’s favorite is the raspberry. He loves fruity desserts. The raspberry kringle, like the almond, has layers of thin pastry on the top and bottom, with the filling sandwiched between and white icing on top. It’s buttery, melt-in-your-mouth goodness with a burst of raspberry jam.

While I enjoyed both, I would have to go with my husband on this one—the almond was my favorite, but I think both are worth purchasing.

In Racine, kringle is often served as both dessert and breakfast. If you like sweet things for breakfast, this pairs beautifully with both coffee and tea. It’s also great with an after-dinner coffee or cocktail, especially when served as dessert.  And it makes a beautiful addition to a carefully prepared brunch.

For the most part, in my family, it serves as an after-tennis practice snack and a quick breakfast on the go. But it is truly delicious, no matter how you serve it.
